CHURCH IN A HOUSE

Rocky Mountain CBA Church Planting

by Harry Olsen, Directory of Church Planting

OlsensThe "House Church" movement in this country is making the existing average size, more traditional church, quite uncomfortable.  The movement speaks of great triumphs around the world and leaves the impression that the existing mid or average size church is history.

If one follows closely however, one notices that few, if any, of these triumphs are in the American House Church.  One can also go on to notice other things in the American House Church that should make the existing church look elsewhere for the source of its woes.

A danger we face in all of this is the tendency to over-react.  We forget that most of our existing Evangelical churches in this country began in houses before they progressed on in to rental spaces and then their own buildings.  This is the way that early stage church growth has been occurring since the time of the book of Acts.  The truth is. because of current economic and societal dynamics, we will have to plant more, not less, churches in houses, especially if they are church plants that do not have a sponsoring or mother church.

There is an approach to Church Planting not spoken of much in church planting circles that works well for planting churches in homes, whether from a mother church base or from an unsponsored base.  We are using this approach, along with other approaches, in our Rocky Mountain Church Planting.  If you would like to know more about planting a church in a home, without having to join the "House church" parade, then call or e-mail me at 303-710-1063 or harry.olsen@rmcba.org

Let's not be afraid of the "Household of Faith" beginning in the household.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS BAPTIST CHURCH BIRTHS HISPANIC MINISTRY IN UTAH

Fabian and Elvia Molina Pastors Hispanic Church
by Hank Green, Missions Pastor, Washington Hts Baptist Church

MolinaIn recent months, Fabian and Elvia Molina, have been getting to know the Latino people of Ogden, Utah.  Through Open Hand Food Pantry, a Bilingual Sunday School Class, a Young Couples Class and other avenues, the Molinas have met needy Latino people, Hispanic day-laborers and others who are looking for a relationship with Jesus Christ and/or other Latino believers.

On February 11th, the yet to be formed Latino church hosted a Valentine Celebration.  God was faithful as 125 people came for this time of inspiring worship, praise and preaching.  Fifteen people indicated that they were accepting Jesus as Savior and an additional ten people renewed their commitment to Him!  A wonderful meal and great fellowship followed.

The next Celebration will be held on April 15th.  The format will be much the same as the Valentine Celebration only this time the celebration will mark the start of the new church - Neuva Cancion Communidad Cristiana (New Song Christian Community).  And then the following Sunday, April 22nd, regular Spanish weekly meetings of the new church will begin.  Young people and adults will be invited to this meeting spoken in Spanish, while nursery, preschool, and elementary children will attend the English speaking children's programming offered by Washington Heights Baptist Church.  The meeting will be somewhat informal in tone and will feature the singing of 2-3 praise songs, a time of praising the Lord, the giving of prayer requests, receiving of an offering and a Bible study led by Fabian.

Celebrations on Sunday evenings, which feature an evangelistic message by Fabian, music led by a larger praise band and a meal with fellowship will continue on approximately a bi-monthly schedule.

Please pray as Neuva Cancion Communidad Cristiana is birthed!

WHATEVER IT TAKES!

We have been promoting the next "Growing Healthy Churches Cluster Meetings" for the last few weeks now and have come to realize that some of you would be interested in participating, but the $3000 fee is just a bit more than you and/or your church can handle right now.  We want you to know that we hear you and will do WHATEVER IT TAKES to assist you in participating.  THAT'S HOW MUCH WE BELIEVE these meetings will benefit you as a pastor and greatly affect the future of your church.  So, we at Rocky Mountain CBA would like you to reconsider being part of these monthly cluster meetings under the following new fee format:

For $75 per month you will be able to attend the monthly meeting conducted by  "Growing Healthy Churches" trained leaders.  You will receive a different book each month - the monthly reading assignments.  You will be challenged to take what you learn and apply the principles to your life and your church and YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Call Edie at 303-772-1205 today if you are even thinking about particpating.  We want to hear from you.  The first meeting is scheduled to begin on June 25th.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

National Day of PrayerThe National Day of Prayer is taking place on Thursday, May 3rd. "America is in desperate need of prayer.  Our nation continues to reject the biblical values of our Founding Fathers, placing our freedoms - and future - in jeopardy.

Given the strain on the moral fabric of our country, how good it is to know that we are not without hope.  2 Chronicles 7:14 assures us that if we humble ourselves before the Lord with repentant hearts, He will hear from Heaven and be faithful to forgive us and heal our land.  There has never been a more critical time in our history to lift our needs to God, and as we do, we can have full confidence in His willingness to respond in ways that are "immeasurable more than all we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20)."  Shirley Dobson, National Day of Prayer Chairman.

WELCOME FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH - LA JUNTA, COLORADO

We want to welcome our newest member church to the Rocky Mountain CBA - First Baptist Church of La Junta, Colorado.  This church of about 60 attendees has a long history as one of the oldest churches in the area Gleasons-La Juntahaving been founded in 1888.  Formerly associated with the ABC-USA, the church voted to affiliate with the Rocky Mountain CBA in March 2007.  The church has been pastored by Rev. Paul Gleason since early 2004.  Paul graduated from Biola with a BA and received a MA from Talbot Theological Seminary.  Both degrees are in Christian Education.  While at Biola, Paul met his future wife, Karen and they married in 1974.  Besides being a great partner in ministry, Karen has been an elementary school teacher for 19 years and presently teaches 4th grade.  The Gleasons have two grown children-Joshua, who is a restaurant manager in Yuma, AZ and Joylene, who with her husband, Jeff Green are in ministry in Dalton, Georgia.  Paul and Karen live on 4 acres out in the country north of La Junta.  Paul enjoys taking care of their chickens and cattle.  Together they love to camp in their motorhome when the opportunity arises and they enjoy to company of their three small dogs.  Welcome!

"CHAPLAIN ANDY"

CBAmerica Gains New Fulltime Guard Chaplain

Andy MeverdenSince 1994, Andy Meverden has served the soldiers and families of the Colorado Army National Guard.  Better know as "Chaplain Andy," this 31 year military veteran knows what it's like to balance church ministry and now a second career along with part-time ministry to Colorado Guard members.  A three-day "temporary duty trip to Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001 landed him literally across the parking lot from the Pentagon when the terrorist-guided airliner slammed into it's North Face.  "After notifying church and family that I was safe, I spent the next 6 hours helping with the evacuation of disoriented Pentagon employees."  Five months later, he received warning orders to prepare to serve as the chaplain to a Special Forces battalion of Green erets heading for Afghanistan.  After a fruitful year-long deployment, he returned to a painful ministry change back home.  While continuing his part-time Guard chaplaincy, he pioneered the implementation of Readjustment and Reintegation (R&R) weekend family retreats for returning soldiers and their families.  He's supervised R&Rs for over 10 units over the past three years.  Simultaneously, he helped prepare most of these units and their families for deployments, developing briefings to aid in the separation.  The saddest part of his duties included serving on eight casualty nofification teams for the next-of-kin of those killed and wounded in action who reside in Colorado.

Pray for Chaplain Andy as he takes his substantial Guard and Active Duty ministy experience and ramps into his new position as fulltime support chaplain and chaplain recruiter, trainer and mentor.  He currently has 8 chaplain candidates in different stages of the application process.  Pray that he might be a faithful servant and representative of Christ in the Colorado National Guard community.
